yard work

got out right after getting the paper and did both front and back, trimming and mowing....took until ten.....then I showered off and sat down to read the paper.....so in a while I'll have a burger for lunch, and tonight can be steak and fries......maybe tomorrow I'll make a Walmart run and get things for the trip....like small bottle of mouthwash, ear-buds, energy drink for driving....that works, in my experience.....maybe granola bars for in the car.....once I get going I don't like to stop.....Charlotte says the hash is made and is in the freezer, for the reunion on the 9th....Uncle Carl gave his approval to the taste of the batch ......still need to go and check out the luggage.....I'm not flying, so I guess I can take pretty much what I want and leave it in the Jeep in case I need it....like a jacket for if it rains or whatever.....might get up around 90 this afternoon.....they said it was 90 yesterday, but it didn't seem that hot to me.....I did have the ceiling fan on when I went to bed, but I turned it off sometime in the wee small hours.....

between fronts today

the tropical low is moving into NC, while another low is moving in from the west....so clouds are coming and going and it's sticky conditions with the heat and humidity again.....I went to the grocery store, so for supper I can fix sirloin steak, steak fries, steamed squash.....maybe not for today, but for a couple of days that's one option.....another option is a burger with slaw, a simple meal.....for lunch I'm considering a spam-and-egg sandwich on a bun.....read the Wednesday paper, nothing much of note there this week.....walked over to the Post Office and filled out a card to have my mail held from Monday to Friday next week.....I'll try to get the weeds cut down tomorrow morning, if it's not raining.....watched a 50s era Mike Hammer movie last night....hadn't seen that one before.....ended up getting lots of rain yesterday in scattered storms....

Plenty of rain

Showers coming and going since mid morning....and it looks like the biggest part is yet to come....so is hasn't got really hot at all, a rain cooled 70 or so mostly in the afternoon ......I felt grungy after working on greasy surfaces in the kitchen, that needed doing....so I took a shower after that job and am now just sitting and watching the rain again......got J. Airplane on the mog roku.....saw them at an outdoor show at Long Beach State......there was a long ticket line, but we just walked over to this other gate that must have been for the bands or something, and just faked our way in....the bouncer dude at that gate didn't seem to care what was happening......

cloudy, muggy

75F and 100% humidity makes for 77 heat index around 9 in the morning.....the tropical depression weather has it storming down around Augusta and Aiken, with a little blob on the radar spinning off towards here maybe....should be able to go walk in a few minutes without getting rained on I think.....but I'll be soaked in sweat by the time I get back I imagine....I had a chicken wing, three ribs, and a cob of white corn for supper Monday....they picked up the trash today, holiday schedule....egg on toast for breakfast.....might have breakfast for supper today, and then it's grocery day again....I need to scrub down the kitchen one day this week, so it doesn't gross out the kids when they visit.....maybe I can get the yard done on Thursday, after things dry out some.....I could have my mail held 6/4 to 6/8, stop by the P.O. and fill out a card....I got a free app on the iPad to get streaming France 24 news English service, so I can take my overseas evening news with me on "vacation".....might buy some ear-buds that work before next week....we should take a hot dish to the reunion but I don't know what.....escalloped potatoes with ham in a cheese sauce?

edges of Beryl

out walking earlier you could smell charcoal smoke, as folks were out on front porches starting traditional holiday cooking.....why front porch cooking, instead of the back yard? Because when one of those seasonal rainstorms comes through for half an hour you can sit secure and dry under the porch roof and keep smoking the ribs......now the sun is out again.....some company that developed a housing project in Greenville with houses for first-time and low-income buyers built a neighborhood where every house had a front porch, like this mill village housing.....they are talking to Clinton government about building 15 houses here, over where 108 comes into town....with front porches.....for a community feeling, they say.....

tropical depression

the center is down in Georgia now, but is going to move up into South Carolina Tuesday.....one thing said it would come within 156 miles of here eventually......and head north and east and back out to sea later in the week.....so today and tomorrow there might be wind and rain from this thing.....68F and 100% humidity on my early walk, clouded over.....some sun coming through now.....I'll have the other half of the ribs and the other cob of corn for supper, with cole slaw too I suppose.....I put some raisins in the store bought slaw to make it more like the way I make it myself.....I guess the storm came ashore just below hurricane force, so some holiday events got canceled for yesterday and today.....rip currents at the beach, so no swimming allowed on the big tourist weekend in many places....just muggy around here is all.....

Sunday, May 27, 2012

sunday evening

was sitting out on the front porch as it got dark watching a storm come from the east, but it ended up sliding by mostly just to the north....only a little wind and drizzle here.....lots of lightnin' bugs out though.....didn't even turn the tv on today at all.....been reading on the kindle mostly....took a nap.....didn't end up getting that hot...stayed about 80, what with the clouds and all.....

extended weather report

the days we will be in Charleston are predicted to be "extremely hot"....feels like over 100 with the humidity.....and the days the family are here in Clinton are predicted to be in the 80s with rain.....and 95 and mostly sunny the day of the reunion.....right now it's pleasant here with sunshine and a wind from the north....with some windows open, air is moving through the house nicely.....the town is dead in the middle of a long weekend.....once again I could have walked down the middle of Broad Street and not been hit by a car on my way to get the Sunday paper.....and Broad St. carries two state highways through downtown.....I finished the potato salad with supper yesterday, but I still have a pound of cole slaw......I read a book about Ike in WWII, and found a movie about that too last night, about the build-up to D-day......everybody smokes a lot in those war history things.....sat out on the porch some as it was getting dark, was cool enough by then, with the breeze.....people out walking, etc....one group walked by, five or six people not talking to each other but each person either talking on a cell phone or texting.....I just don't get it I guess.....what does the future hold?

Saturday, May 26, 2012

nice breeze

a 5 mph north wind is tempering the heat and humidity, so it's staying really comfortable inside and out....some scattered high clouds are helping too.....so they are probably having good times at the Scottish games at Furman, and at the hot-air balloons and concerts in Simpsonville.....I think there is baseball at Flour Field too this evening, etc.....I'm just kicking back on Bailey St. as usual myself.....been picking on the 1957 Silvertone flat-top......it's really quiet around here today....no dogs, kids, lawnmowers, motorcycles making a racket....just birdsong and the breeze in the trees....fine with me......

a tropical heat wave

think Carmen Miranda dance scene in Technicolor.....TS Beryl might bring rain to the region by mid-week.....for the holiday weekend temps pushing into the 90s.....I've got ceiling fans activated in a couple rooms.....but haven't had to crank the AC yet.....the meaty ribs are delicious, and the corn is satisfactory, but not as tender as that Valley Center corn I used to get at the local market....so I have cold chicken, cold ribs, slaw, etc.... for the next few days.....watched a Hell's Angels movie last night from 1966....with Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra, and Bruce Dern....it was pretty silly really.....I might have seen it back in the day, don't remember.....it was still warm out on the porch around ten at night.....it helps to use Off.....the one neighbor around the corner on Washington has got his whole house fan up and running....it will probably run for the next few months.....you hear this whooshing sound in the background all the time.....sort of soothing actually in the middle of the night when you got a window open and can hear it.....this morning you could see big pickups hauling trailers loaded with ATVs....dogs sticking their heads out the windows.....Summertime approaches.....

Friday, May 25, 2012

63 degrees and 63% humidity

so walking for the paper wasn't that hot but was still sweaty sorta....going to get to 90 they predict....think I'll go ahead and do the ribs this afternoon....have them with potato salad and white corn on the cob.....and save the other half of that for Monday, the actual holiday.....hot dogs are all gone so lunch can be grilled cheese on 12 grain with fried bacon spam .....I cleaned some toxic looking things out of containers in the fridge, and gave the containers a good washing....have to vacuum today or maybe Saturday.....I think I've been doing that on Saturdays mostly....right now it looks good for walking the park before it heats up too much.....there's a sign on one of the mill office buildings that there is a ministry there now and all year day care starting up too.....I think they are close to paving the new parking lots, and I read where they had got $60,000 from some where to do the lighting.....I guess parking lot lighting is expensive.....maybe that includes the landscaping too? So I should do some more house cleaning this coming week, and get together whatever I need for the Charleston trip....maybe get some kind of decent walking shoes, besides my hiking sandals.....and like overnight stuff, a toothbrush? Have to look out on the porch and see what's still in my luggage from 2008.....

live music returns

the Swinging Medallions make their annual street dance appearance this evening a couple of blocks away on the town square.....Double Shot of My Baby's Love, yeh, yeh, yeh......and my Allstate agent is having an open house today in their new location, about a block from the square....free food they say....don't think I'll go to that....but I should go in there some time before July to talk about my house insurance....they sent a letter saying that due to all the storms last year insurance rates are going up and maybe I want to review my coverage....whatever....I'll wait and see what amount of money they are talking about first, that ought to come in the mail soon....a little cold supper was good last night.....cold fowl, potato salad, buttered dinner roll....probably be the same this evening....the grocery deli chicken is pretty good I think, compared to KFC say......I might pick up a bag of ice somewhere today, since it's getting hot maybe.....a couple of days ago they were predicting triple digits by Sunday, but in today's paper the forecast is for 90 degrees.....sounds like the mail truck just went past without anything for this address.....nothing yesterday either.....well, my bills are taken care of for May already anyway......

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

grocery store report

They had the meal deal again where you get a cut-up cold fried chicken, a pound of potato salad, a pound of slaw, and a small thing of dinner rolls for 10 bucks.....or you can have macaroni salad for one of the salads.....you get two salads anyway....and I found some of the St. Louis style ribs I like....and the white corn I got two for fifty cents....got some maple sausage links for Sunday breakfasts.....and Bacon Spam was marked down, so that can be lunch meat, etc.....and I filled up at the Shell using my grocery store discount card and got regular at $3.19 per.......walked when I got back, and went through the Clinton paper.....it's still only 64F at noon, all the overcast hasn't burned off yet.....so I'm set for holiday weekend eats.......

57 and thick fog and overcast

It did rain yesterday.....about a half hour thunderstorm downpour.....watched it from the porch.....I watched the news after supper, and then my British sit-com....and a A&E show about pirate ships....and a "rockumentary" about Crazy Horse.....that was a good one.....I saw Neil Young and Crazy Horse in a bar on Melrose in '68 or '69.....we had gone to see somebody else, and seeing them do some songs from their first album was just an unadvertised bonus type thing.....well, it's grocery day....I'm out of cheese, orange juice, and low on eggs....I'll look at what to do for the holiday weekend....and maybe get a cooked chicken and some potato salad....hot weather meals because now they are saying 100F by Sunday......

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

saw $3.23 at a cash only station

AAA says S.C. has the cheapest gas in the nation.....fine with me, since I'll be driving to Charleston and back in a couple weeks.....63F and high clouds here, half a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.....right now looks like a good time to go out and finish the yard work....cut the weeds out back.....for supper I had chili over Fritos with an egg-over-easy on top.....lunch is still hot dogs....this was a poached egg on toast breakfast morning....I have 12 grain bread this week....I'll probably buy ribs tomorrow for Memorial day weekend .....and the sweet corn is in.....some storms came through the Upstate last night, but missed Clinton.....out late on the front porch there was some lightning to the East, but too far away to hear the thunder.....fireflys continue, but I'm not seeing the bats lately.....hope they are OK......

Monday, May 21, 2012

dreams sometime

seem to wear me out, leaving me tired when I wake up.....that's no good....nice looking morning again....need to go to the library and work in the yard some this morning....will get to the 80s by the afternoon, still in the high 50s now I think.....steak, cornbread, salad yesterday.....can have a hot dog for lunch.....found some spy movie to watch last night, and watched quite a bit of Sky News.....where I usually watch the local news was showing golf, or maybe it was hockey....wasn't the news anyway.....and pretty late I was sitting out on the porch firefly spotting and enjoying the night air.....

Sunday, May 20, 2012

nothin' could be finer

than to be in Caroliner in the morrrrning.....the folks didn't have many phonograph records, but they did have that Spike Lee....I think that's his name, isn't it? [actually Spike Jones] Beautiful out on the morning walk, clear, bright, 52 degrees, a little breeze.....felt almost like out camping in the mountains.....on a more disgruntled note, roku starting marketing in the U.K. so that opened a whole can of worms with the BBC license thing and now BBC 24 hour world news live doesn't work on roku in the U.S.A. I contacted customer support to express my dismay, but I don't think the powers that be are going switch it back on anytime soon, if ever......so I'll have to just watch Al-Jeezera.....I guess BBC America is on channel 38.1 or something some time in the evening after the local news I usually watch on 4.1.......or there's RT from Russia, but that might be controlled by the Putin mob, I'm not sure.....library books are due tomorrow.....and I should cut the weeds out front again pretty soon......20% chance of more rain moving in overnight tonight....the ads in the Sunday paper were all about Memorial Day grilling.....I saw one thing about turning a Weber kettle into a smoker....don't think I'll bother, the Weber hasn't left the shed since I moved here.....you can do ribs in the oven well enough.....I watched a Canned Heat concert from 1973....people in the crowd looked wasted.....

Saturday, May 19, 2012

cool enough

this morning to wear my fifty cent sweater on the newspaper walk....it worked fine....kinda smells like mothballs though....I'll let it air out.....was 55F, but mostly clear.....the bag of salad I got says it's Italian blend....hearts of romaine and red cabbage.....I used some sweet onion and olives too and had salad with pizza for supper....I poured together two half empty salad dressing bottles.....ranch and olive oil vinegar......so I should do some chili and corn bread today, and then Sunday could be steak and salad.....there's baseball on Fox this evening, I might watch some of that.....last night I watched two episodes of DS9, it was a continued story.....I was playing Doors radio yesterday afternoon on mog/roku.....I think I'll drive out to Ora and loop back through Laurens, for no particular reason....for a drive in the country....

Friday, May 18, 2012

mist/drizzle

started right at the end of my newspaper walk, low skies, 63F.....stayed 70 in the house overnight with a couple windows opened some.....the chili and cornbread made a tasty supper, of course there are leftovers.....in the paper there was a small article predicting a "broiling" Summer across the West and much of the South.....half way through the year we are down 6" on our rain totals for the area......wild fire danger.....my left knee was aching some early on, probably from getting some strain yesterday dragging foliage cuttings out to the curb.....I'll work more along that fence line some other day, maybe....not today.....so I've got the knee brace elastic thing on again.....I guess the drizzle has let up so I can go walk some more and maybe loosen up some aches.....I don't know how much more is left of the school year around here, not much I don't think.....

Thursday, May 17, 2012

brief severe

thunderstorm just rolled over this poor old town like a freight train in heat....moving from east to west instead of the usual other way around....went out on the front porch to watch....didn't last long but did the cow on the rock thing for a while there....and of course the sirens started up like they always do when this happens.....car wreaks? places hit by lightning? now it's going off into the distance, but on the radar it looks like more could be moving in shortly....the chili cooking aroma fills the house.....boy, it's still rumbling some.....

in the cool of the morning

I went out and topped two shrubs along the fence line.....they were messy looking, one had a big tangle of dead vine in it, and an old bird's nest.....used the electric pole saw and then dragged the stuff to the curb.....cleaned up some with lopers and the yard spork....'bout wore myself out doing that.....put chili in the crock pot for tonight...I have corn bread mix too.....can either have more pizza for lunch, or a hot dog.....It didn't rain in Clinton yesterday, but near Fountain Inn there was a thunderstorm with pea-sized hail.....will probably get up around 80 again this afternoon....I saw a few fireflies again last night....I'm bogged down in one library book, don't know if I'll bother trying to finish it or not.....watched a thing about Lou Reed's album Transformer....that was interesting.....

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

hot and muggy

Got my walking and shopping done.....even went looking for a plain old fashioned pitchfork to clean up some dead vines and stuff in the back, but couldn't find one.....are they too dangerous to sell anymore? We might go attack zombies with them or something.....so I got a thing called a "yard and bedding fork" that's made in China out of various plastic pieces....but it looks like it will be OK for the purpose, and I can't fall on any sharp parts by accident and injure myself....there are no sharp parts.....it's like a gardening spork.....I've got New York strip steak and salad greens for today I think.....and I got fixings for chili with the pork for the meat in it.....watched a Yes concert last night....some tricky guitar playing there.....ended with Roundabout....I might turn on Yes radio on MOG and just sit down now....was nothing but junk in the mail today and yesterday.....

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

shook the house

Thunder around 2 am......eventually there was one huge rip of lightning and the skies opened up, as they say.....rain poured down in buckets as the noisy part of the front rolled off to the east and I went back to sleep.....was still raining when I got up, but by the time I finished breakfast it had turned to just fog, so I could go get the paper....things were pretty flooded around town.....there was like a little creek flowing off the church grounds and into a storm drain on Academy.....63F, got up to 80 yesterday, same predicted today.....chance of afternoon showers again....managed to iron skillet the tortillas to a little crispiness so the huevo rancheros would just lift out of the pan and onto the plate easily.....tasty stuff.....used the church sale fifty cent glass bowl to poach an egg this morning....it could have been made for that, just the right size.....found a quirky Brit series to watch, and also watched a movie about corruption in high places.....those are always believable anyway.....

Monday, May 14, 2012

maybe later

I can go for a walk.....there's a rain front passing over right now......drove over to get the newspaper.....it rained almost all day yesterday, and started up again in the small hours this morning.....by Thursday the rainy weather should be gone and 80s are expected.....didn't get out of the 60s with the Sunday rain and clouds.....I might make huevos rancheros with frijoles for supper, haven't done that in a while, and I still have tortillas....pizza slice in the microwave works for a lunch.....plenty pizza left.....watched a movie about the Monkees last night.....

Sunday, May 13, 2012

maybe call it stormy sunday

80% chance of rain.....clouded over now, but not windy or chilly really.....yesterday I felt like something different so I drove through Little Caesar and picked up a hot-n-ready pepperoni for five bucks....and forty-five cents tax.....ate two slices with a glass of merlot for my supper.....can have a slice for lunch today.....they looked pretty busy, two other cars drove up while I was there, and I was only there for a couple of minutes.....later Brian called and said he had an iPad now so we tried out the Face Time app.....that's really cool, like Skype but works better, seemed to me anyway.....it's all in the iOS cloud, or whatever......I might try to call Highland later in the day, Dave said everyone would be there for birthdays/mothers day......watched some 1950s western with Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn, after the overseas news.....then went on to bed shortly after.....sour mash french toast and sausage for breakfast, yum.....not getting through my library books very fast, I'll be reading and suddenly find my eyes closed.....maybe it's too comfortable lying on the sofa ......

Saturday, May 12, 2012

not tuna and peas on toast

it was pork and peas on toast....the great pork saga continues.....I watched a long Jethro Tull concert on Netflix....it built up to Aqua Lung as the last song, with Locomotive Breath as the encore.....really good picture and sound production.....and I watched the last Kingdom they have on instant streaming, so I'll have to find another strange British humor show....but they have a whole category of those, so I'll find something.....clouded over this morning, about the same temp as the last few mornings.....rain might get here overnight and into Sunday....there's a big art fair thing in Greenville this weekend, where they block off the center of downtown to traffic, etc....might rain on it I guess....nothing going on around here I can think of right now.....in a week or so they start having the Thursday night street dances again, once a month through September?....that's over by the train tracks.....

Friday, May 11, 2012

clear, windy

I keep thinking it's a Saturday, but it's Friday....so it was an oatmeal for breakfast day.....I watched a war movie last night that said in the opening credits "introducing Charles Bronson"....it was from 1958.....and I watched a Kingdom and a Deep Space Nine.....and read some in a book about Sir Issac Newton....well, it's a novel with him as a character.....played some 12 string in the afternoon....no more rain predicted until Sunday....the paper said the recent rains had helped some with the drought.....filled up some farmers irrigation ponds at least....I guess I'll go walk some in the breeze.....

Thursday, May 10, 2012

looks like eight pounds

I've lost since my birthday.....the all-taco diet accounts for some of that? Most of it was from the norovirus diet which I would not recommend to anyone......went out back this morning and ran the weed-eater and the mower.....66 outside, was 60 in the house this morning....might get up to 70 today.....somehow that vine with the thorns on it got me on the left arm, and it was bleeding slowly but I didn't realize it until I saw the blood on my white T shirt.....so I sprayed that with some stain stuff and tossed it into the washer for the next load.....put some salve on my arm and it looks OK.....woke up at odd times during the night, but got back to sleep eventually.....I can have the last chicken wing and cheese toast for lunch.....it's lawn-mowing Thursday across the street at the church-grounds....that always takes a while 'cause that's a big area altogether.....was pleasant enough on the early walk.....and I'm counting the yard work as the rest of my exercise for right now.....

Wednesday, May 9, 2012

it woke me up once

rain blowing against the bedroom window.....but I went back to sleep without looking at the clock to see what time.....things pretty wet on the newspaper walk, but not actually coming down right then.....went grocery shopping and got coffee, eggs, juice.....dental floss.....but I've still got plenty of that pork for meat, didn't spend any money on that this week.....so I got out of the store cheap this time.....they are having a "grand re-opening" of the revamped and beautified shopping facility....instead of more tacos tonight I'm going to make an open face pork sandwich with country gravy, and peas.....tacos for lunch still though.....there's more rain moving into the county right now, so I'll sit and read the Clinton paper instead of heading out for a walk.....and the back weeds will have to wait for a drier day.....

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

wild turkey

crossing the road on the way back from a trip to Laurens.....I walked around downtown Clinton some......watched them working on the parking lots.....people were working on the train tracks too, or something next to the train tracks.....underground power lines? And I got in the Jeep and went over to check out a new ABC that had advertised itself as "discount" in the paper....they have the same prices as everybody else....nice looking store though.....some heavier rain over that way....

right at sunrise

it started raining.....and there was still some drizzle an hour later when I went for the paper, so I drove over there.....still some light rain now.....I went ahead after lunch yesterday and worked some on cleaning up the back porch....used the dolly to wheel some boxes out to the shed....but before I move anything heavy with that hand-truck again I'll have to put some air in the tires....I guess it's been a couple of years since I used it for anything.....I was going to do the back yard today, but it's pretty soaked out there.....that might have to wait 'til another day....and my back is kinda aching anyway, from moving stuff around I guess.....this weather is from the South, so it's not that cold....but they say something is going to come down from the North over the next two or three days.....colder rainy conditions predicted.....

Monday, May 7, 2012

French president, etc....

I thought the guy gave a pretty good speech.....of course electing a socialist crashed the stock market....life goes on....the Tories got thumped in England too.....here it is cooler again, so I was able to get out and do the front yard in a nice breeze with variable overcast....I'll shoot for doing the back Tuesday....50% chance of rain then, but I bet I can it done OK.....I should cook up the rest of those chicken wings today.....maybe I'll end up freezing some of the carnitas.....make chili some other month.... I'm still enjoying my lunch tacos with the good guacamole.....those are good yellow corn tortillas, I'll have to make note of the brand.....they were cheap too....when I got up around 4 to go to the bathroom and then to the kitchen for a glass of water the supermoon was casting sharp shadows....no clouds Sunday night....some clouds for the sunrise walk, to the East.....but I did the rest of my walking behind the lawn-mower, so I'm done with exercise for the day I think.....

Sunday, May 6, 2012

Bank holiday

Watching BBC I learn that the first Monday in May is a bank holiday.....so tomorrow we get a long weekend. ...with cinco day and all....but I have every day off anyway I guess....

short storm last night

and it was clouded over when I went out to look at the advertised supermoon....maybe tonight it'll be clear.....my stomach virus or whatever it was had me skipping and skimping on meals, so I've lost five pounds.....maybe that's why these khaki shorts fit me again.....they have a dedicated cell phone pocket.....it's starting to turn gray outside, with a north wind picking up.....it got up to 86 yesterday, with the normal for the date being 76....stayed right at 70 in the house all day long with three windows opened a little and the ceiling fan on in the living room.....there was a dog running up and down the block barking around midnight, but finally somebody must have chased it off or brought it in ......

Saturday, May 5, 2012

the moon was big and bright last night

the clouds had left by the evening, so there was a good view from the front porch.....and tonight is the maximum full moon of the year they say.....I guess with all the taco fixings I've got on hand I'm plenty ready for Cinco de Mayo anyway.....today my on-line bank balance matches my by-hand checkbook balance.....everything has cleared from last month finally.....it's going to be a hot one today, with 50% chance of afternoon thunderstorms.....nothing but bird-song outside right now, but later there will be lawnmower noise I'm sure.....at least from over at the credit union, that always gets done on Saturday....I'll walk over in that direction in a few minutes I guess.....

Friday, May 4, 2012

might rain

there's some thunder storms over around Athens this morning, and they might get this far east....maybe.....72 and cloudy right now......those tacos turned out really good, and there's plenty more of 'em.....going to make a couple for lunch later.....and then this evening have chicken wings, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet peas.....my knee was hurting some this morning when I got up, so I put the brace thing on before getting my walks done.....and my right ankle is making noises....oh well, old age....I was out on the front porch eating my apple and I heard a metallic crash and then loud voices.....looked down the street and the kid who is always out working on his hot rod must have gone too far up his ramps   and right over one of them somehow, because one ramp was under the driver's door, not under any wheel....him and his girlfriend were standing there looking at it.....that's all the excitement around here I guess.....

Thursday, May 3, 2012

already smells good

and it's only nine in the morning....4 gloves of garlic, a handful of chopped cilantro, handful of diced onion, and 4 lbs. of pork butt.....all day in the crock pot.....overcast, mid-60s so far today.....will get up close to 90?  I can go walk while it's still cool and then I need to sweep, mop, and vacuum.....the very last bit of the meatloaf will make a lunch sandwich today.....and then it's going to be the tacos for a week at least....that's OK with me, I like tacos.....I'll make some guacamole.....the AAA magazine here covers the Carolinas, and each issue features some region of the two states.....like the coastal areas, the mountains....the mag that came yesterday features the Upstate....right around Clinton in other words.....there are little articles about Spartanburg and Greenville....and some of the other towns....and the battlefields....and other points of historical interest, etc.....tourists in the Upstate?  why not.....some time I should go up and check out the Blue Ridge mountains and all that I suppose.....but I'm just too lazy to run around much....and too cheap to burn gasoline.....

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

nice breeze, some high clouds

pleasant walking conditions when I went over around the mill park after getting back from the grocery store....I got them to cut an 8 lb. boston butt in half for me...I don't think the whole thing would have fit in my cooker....and I got chicken wings too....and two avacados, cilantro, corn tortillas....my lunches can be carnitas tacos for a while, after I do that chunk of pork tomorrow or the next day....the kind with just onion and cilantro, no lettuce or cheese in those "street tacos".....watched an old Jamie Lee Curtis movie last night, where she's a cop in New York....and some Brit comedy and overseas news after the local news and weather....I don't know why I get a kick out of watching the British weather-man....just his style I guess....well, I've got the Chronicle to read.....and then lunch....

grocery ad report

happens on Tuesdays.....watermelons and sweet corn featured in produce....hmmm...and boston butt marked down a buck a pound....maybe I'll get some of that and crock pot it with cilantro, garlic, onion, oregano....and call it carnitas instead of calling it pulled pork....Hass avacados in the produce also....and get some tortillas, some frijoles...that whould be one way to go ....already have most of a Vidalia onion, a big one I need to use up before it goes to waste...we'll see else we can come up with....need orange juice and bread this week....coffee might last 'til next time...plenty of olive oil on hand....get some olives to go with the mexican food idea maybe....

90s by the weekend?

a warming trend.....has been overcast this morning, but I think it's starting to burn off....went over and found what I was looking for at Walmart, a few dollars cheaper than just shopping in Clinton..... I have the fixings for meatloaf, mashed potatoes, limas....with gravy...for this evening.....I haven't gone on my second walk yet, but it should still be fairly cool.....driving on Washington to get out to the highway I went past a house across from the mill that had fallen down.....looked like some burned debris towards where the front porch had been....don't know when that happened, since the last time I went to Laurens anyway.....maybe there will be something in the paper tomorrow.....happy May Day!
