2000 gallons of moonshine

somebody told the Spartanburg County sheriff that there were guys selling moonshine at a roadside produce stand.....so they eventually busted this huge still, they showed it on the news, and they found 2K gallons of white whisky there.....there had been trucks coming and going for years they say....they grew the corn on the property.....people e-mailing comments to the news show are saying "it's just part of our Southern heritage"......I love this place.....selling it along with sweet corn, peaches, and watermelons? Remember that old movie "Thunder Road"? Some things never change......

nice out back

walked, and then spent about an hour wiping down the woodwork, and scrubbing down the kitchen and bath....and ran the vacuum, even on the back porch....then sat out in the back yard and ate an apple....it's too sunny on the the front porch in the morning right this time of year that hour of the morning.....beautiful day out back.....lawn, birds, squirrels, trees, vines, blue sky, sitting in the shade of the house.....I moved one of those resin chairs from the front to the back a few days ago.....I could start on the ham for supper tonight I suppose.....fry some and think of a couple of sides.....grits and something else? just a little red gravy on grits sounds good.....

drier air moving down from the North

making it more comfortable today.....right now 73 and 7 mph NE wind.....yesterday the AC was on after supper again, and the storms went around Clinton.....lightning flashes to the South, towards Columbia....so I ran the ceiling fan to get to sleep......took a while to get to sleep, with various aches and pains bugging me.....joint pain in my bum left leg mostly.....but once I got to sleep I slept through 'til dawn OK, which doesn't always happen.....last night around 10 I was out on the porch rocker, and could see other people out on the porch too, and people out walking dogs and riding bikes.....people wait for it to get cool .......I should spend some time today cleaning house.....right now I'm going to go walk the park, while there's still a cooling breeze......

walking, groceries, newspapers

once again there's a breeze keeping it fairly nice in the morning.....last night I could turn the air off and open the windows around sunset, what with the usual thunder and rain passing through to cool things off.... in the afternoon the heat index got up to 104 by 1:30 or so......so the AC ran for a few hours.....I found some ribs that look like they will work for me at the store....and the corn looks OK.....and I bought a bag of slaw mix, and some ham....more oatmeal, eggs, OJ.....some sandwich rolls to use with ham and with pulled pork for light Summer suppers....just a sandwich and a salad side of some kind seems to work well in this weather....reading the obits in the Clinton paper, I wonder about all these folks in their 40's and early 50's kicking off....in the Greenville paper there was a woman 29 years old.....of course they never say what people die of....well, sometimes they say if it's cancer I guess.....but I wonder what happened sometimes....is it all due to smoking and fried fatback? Or crashing motorcycles, drunk with no helmet.....that's a good one around here....or rolling your pick-up with no seatbelt fastened, open container in evidence.....ain't nobody gonna tell ME what to do!

grocery ad in the mail

it looks like they have decent enough prices for sweet corn and baby-back ribs.....hopefully they will actually have the stuff out on the morning when the sale starts.....they don't always manage that.....so probably ribs and corn and beans for the 4th.....now I just need 6 more supper ideas until the first Wednesday in July......life is so complicated.....I did figure out Tuesday lunch OK....fried thick bologna and grilled onion on half a roll with buttermilk ranch dressing....I'm out of mayo.....some potato chips, glass of chablis with that.....it's been mild here in the morning, but the heat and humidity are going to start adding up in a couple of hours I think.....might have to run the air for two or three hours, like yesterday.....

bright sun and a west wind

but it's so humid that even the breeze won't dry off the sweat when you're walking....so I felt pretty bedraggled by the time I got back from going around the mill park....drink some water and sit under the fan, is the best thing.....damp and puddles everywhere from the soaking during the night, city truck going around picking up tree debris.....some places you have to walk in the street because limbs came down on the sidewalk.....but that's OK, there is hardly any traffic around here.....70% chance of more thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.....I need to figure meals for next week, before Wednesday shopping......

Monday, June 27, 2011

heck of a storm

went through right around sunset.....lots of lightning, one strike looked like it wasn't very far away....a couple of blocks or something.....the big brick chimney on the old mill is the tallest thing around here......I wonder if it gets hit....I think it has lightning rods on it.....it's still raining some at ten o'clock......I don't think the 10 0'clock news will tell me much new, so I'll just go on to bed.....

motorized whellbarrow

I've never seen one of those before.....the cement truck couldn't get all the way back into Earl's yard to pour that pad they formed up a few days ago.....so they take the cement out of the truck into this gas-powered riding wheelbarrow thing.....and then a couple of guys are there with the shovels and floats to work the mud.....the sun has come out as they started working, it was clouded over earlier when I did my walks, so it was cool and comfortable for that.....they are saying mid-90's again late afternoon here.....last night I picked up a TV station from Columbia, so Laurens County was at the top of the weather map on their forecast.....the other stations I get are from North of here, so we are at the bottom of their maps.....so I was getting news from the Midlands, rather than news from the Upstate.....it's hotter and drier in the Midlands this June, than the Upstate.....it was back to oatmeal today for breakfast.....lunch will be a couple of chicken wings and potato salad....supper will be bbq pork on a roll and pork-n-beans, maybe more potato salad.....

Sunday, June 26, 2011

french toast topped with fried apples

.....Sunday breakfast......another cooler morning, might stay in the 80's today.....didn't get all that hot yesterday, never needed to turn on the AC.....fixed the pork chop with oregano and bbq sauce, and had two salad sides.....three-bean, and mustard potato.....the baseball game wasn't very interesting.....I switched to overseas news when the score got to 11-2 in favor of the Mets.....so the Rangers lost, which is good for the Angels, who are now only 2 games back of Texas.....I need to remember to take the trash to the curb later today.....next weekend is a 4th of July weekend.....the fireworks stands are open.....maybe I'll look and see if they have a good price on ribs this week, for the holiday......a whole watermelon is more than I want to deal with, sometimes you can buy a half.....I used to get them free sometimes at the swap meet, and then give half away to a neighbor at the Resort......in the throw-away Advertiser that's on the lawn Sunday mornings, there was a thing about the cucumbers being bitter this year.....the gardener dude in his column said that they had been stressed by drought and heat during the growing season.....I don't eat them anyway.....

Saturday, June 25, 2011

not bad this morning

got my walking done while it was still cool.....some storms went through last night in the area, but all we got here was light rain right before I went to bed.....it did cool off nicely around sunset, so I could turn off the air, which I had turned on about 3:30......I should cook that second pork chop this evening.....I might have bologna on a bolillo for Saturday lunch.....yesterday I had one of those rolls and coffee for breakfast, instead of my oatmeal.....wasn't as filling......but this one vendor at the swap meet used to give us rolls like that in the morning quite often.....these from Walmart aren't quite the same as the kind from the panderia .....or however you spell mexican bakery.....those were more of the pan dulce taste and texture, Walmart's are more like plain white bread.....but they are good as sandwich rolls.....

on the radar

it looks like some thunderstorm type stuff might be tracking in this direction.....muggy as heck, but not all that hot in the house.....maybe rain will get here before I need to turn on the AC.....watching those guys working over the back fence, it looks like they graded an area flat, and are forming it up to pour a pad.....maybe for a travel trailer.....about that size I would say.....around here a travel trailer is called a "camper"....I don't know what they call the old things like people used to put on the back of a pick-up truck.....thinking about it, I haven't seen one of those rigs in years.....don't remember ever seeing one in Clinton.....relegated to the past, like so much else? Today will be cold supper for sure, too hot to cook.....chilled fried chicken from the grocery store deli.....potato salad.....maybe chilled fried apples.....I should have put that can of three-bean salad in the fridge too, but I'm pretty sure it just got stuck in the cupboard on grocery day.....the wind is picking up, and clouds are coming and going.....maybe some little storm is on the way.....

took advantage of a cool morning

and went out and mowed the yard, front and back.....it was cloudy and breezy early on, now it's cleared off.....Earl has some people working out in his back yard.....I don't know what he could be building there, since the utility easement goes down the middle of his yard .....I suppose he knows what he's doing.....there's a skip-loader starting to dig.....but if they are trying to dig for a pool, they are going to hit the water line, or come damn close.....not my business I guess, until my water stops flowing......so I got off to a late start with reading the paper, since I went and got it, but didn't read it until after doing the yard-work.....haven't checked the mail yet either.....I read in the paper that half of the SC corn crop is sub-par due to the heat-wave.....it's getting burned on the stalk before they can get the harvest in.....peaches are OK so far, they got ripe early so they could bring them in before the real heat hurt them......but sweet corn isn't going to be cheap 4th of July weekend.....

Thursday, June 23, 2011

relief from the heat today

it's stayed overcast and around 80 so far today, with a breeze.....it's been raining north around Greenville, and a thunderstorm line went through south, towards Aiken and Augusta.....but here no rain, just a mild afternoon.....if it's cool again tomorrow morning I'll think about cutting the grass out front......

clouds, showers

continued in the night and early morning.....the weather pattern persists, thunder in the evening and then rain.....it's cooler this morning, but still pretty steamy and sticky.....some places had trees down and power out again last night, which has been going on since last weekend.....one little power glitch here last night, enough to make the modem re-set.....I went to Wal*Mart this morning, to get Blue Goo.....also got 1/2 dozen bolillios for a buck from their day-old rack.....haven't had any of those since leaving Escondido.....and I got 2 lbs. of mustard potato salad at the deli counter for 3 bucks......that will work into my cool Summer supper project.....on the way back there was a turtle crossing the highway right in front of the hospital.....I missed it, hope other people saw it in time.....why did the turtle cross the road? (it was following the chicken)

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

grocery shopping

fried chicken and pork chops will dominate this week's menu.....bean salad, fried apples, pork-n-beans, grits.... are possible sides.....took advantage of the two-for-one deal on large bottles of olive oil.....last night the usual thunder storm went through around bedtime.....and rain came behind it around midnight.....still a few drops of rain on the newspaper walk, and a 30% chance of rain this afternoon and evening....I've been alternating lunches between tostadas and bbq sandwiches....today is a sandwich day, I'm pretty sure......when I use up the bbq meat, I have some thick bologna to use as lunch-meat......a fried thick bologna sandwich is something an eatery around here might feature in the weekly specials.....the old cafe over by the mill has a help-wanted ad in the Clinton paper this week, so I guess it really is going to open.....

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

solstice at 1:16 today

at 10 in the morning a heat index of 95.....I was going to walk over and do my banking, but realized I'd be dripping sweat before I got there.....so I drove over and transferred the money to pay Allstate, and then drove to Allstate.....and I did my business with Verizon over the phone, so I'm good with them until 6/20/12......it was around 80 at the breakfast table this morning, didn't cool off much overnight.....had the ceiling fan on for sleeping, which works well.....Pandora seems to be in a power pop mood this morning.....that's OK......my Sharona......

Monday, June 20, 2011

AC running

it's around 98 outside, so I clicked on the air around 4:30......rain storms predicted overnight tonight.....and on through the rest of the week and next weekend....on through all Summer? We'll see......Sunday I didn't feel like cooking much again, so I had a patty melt with swiss and grilled onion on wheat, with pickle slices, and chips....glass of chablis.....that left me the last of the rib-eye for today....with seasoned lima beans and fried potatoes.....so I'm replete and watching the local news, nice and cool in the living room.....I started to sit out on the porch some in the middle of the afternoon, but after a few minutes it was just too muggy to stay outside.....did get my walking done early, right after going to the library, while there was still some wind......tomorrow I might go ahead and pay my homeowner's insurance, get that done.....and pay Verizon for another year.....and celebrate the Solstice!

in the middle of the night

thunder and lightning woke me up.....and I went around and closed some windows so rain wouldn't blow in.....but it never did start raining, just electrical activity and wind.....and this morning I was about to put my oatmeal in the microwave when the power went out.....it was clear and calm right then....but they must have still been working on the lines somewhere.....so I went over to get the newspaper.....there was an officer out in the big intersection where the highways cross directing traffic, and a block south of there you could see the signal was working.....just as I got back to the house, the lights came back on.....so later I'm going to the library.....it's predicted to get close to 100 today....

Sunday, June 19, 2011

power was off

for about an hour yesterday afternoon, while I was watching a Braves game.....and when it came back, they were in a rain delay in Atlanta.....they lost in 10 innings eventually.....Clinton missed the brunt of the last couple of storm fronts, but yesterday one cell made a direct hit on the town....the electricity went on and off three or four times, and then stayed off.....there was lots of wind, rain, lightning....and some hail, briefly.....it wasn't dark yet, and the storm cooled things off, so the lack of power wasn't that much of a problem.....I stayed up late, slept pretty well.....had a nice tostado grande for supper before the power went off.....I think most of the comic strips this morning made some reference to Father's Day.....

Saturday, June 18, 2011

starting to burn off

just finished my second walk, and it's warming up......but the house will stay cool most of the day I think......don't know of any shopping that wants doing, so I don't need to drive anywhere today......probably have a bbq pork and swiss sandwich for lunch, with a glass of chablis.....I got chablis yesterday on the same trip where I went to the hardware store.....that was around 11:30, and there was quite a bit of traffic.....people going to lunch I guess, I'm not usually out driving at that time of day......there's an Atlanta home game on Fox this afternoon.....maybe it won't get rained on, but late afternoon is the time when those thunderstorms do pop-up......I'll fix some taco meat for this evening.....onion, chili powder, oregano, ground round, browned in olive oil....to make a dinner tostado......Sunday I can have rib-eye for Father's Day.....

Friday, June 17, 2011

off my rocker

for 24 hours.....while Elmer's Wood Glue dries.....went by True Value and got glue, some poly varnish and a small brush.....the heat and humidity were making that old rocking chair fall apart....don't think it has anything to do with overloading beyond reasonable tolerances......when the wind blows in a thunderstorm, the porch furniture gets soaked sometimes, so maybe the varnish finish will keep the moisture out of the wood and I can make a porch rocker yet.....I had it pretty much in pieces, applying glue....and then had a fine time trying to put it back together again....at one point I was ready to swear it had never been together in the first place....took a hammer to it finally....tapped it back into shape.....it was too muggy and glare-ey on the porch to work on it, so we ended up in the kitchen, under the fan....check it out tomorrow and see if it's ready to finish.....

78.2, some cloudiness

comfortable enough on the morning walks....no mail.....been reading some just now, one library book to finish before Monday.....maybe if this overcast hangs around it won't get as hot later today as they have been predicting......I'm going to make a tostado for lunch I think, with a glass of cold white zinfandel.....which is actually pink in color.....red beans and rice will be an easy supper of leftovers.....lots of Father's Day ads in the Friday paper....well, I bought myself some sandals last Saturday, that will do for that.....and for some reason the real estate section that's usually in the Sunday paper was in today's instead.....things change.....

Thursday, June 16, 2011

never really got that hot today

haven't had the AC on for several days now.....but they say next week when Summer actually starts it's going to be in the mid-90's every afternoon.....the chicken taco salad worked.....chicken, olives, frijoles, broken up tostada pieces, lettuce, cheese, salsa, ranch dressing, and some kind of guacamole "flavored" product......there was a taquito place I used to go to that asked if you wanted Mexican guacamole or American guacamole.....the Mex kind was chunks of avocado, tomato, cilantro, onion, lime juice ......americano kind was avocado and sour cream run through a blender......this stuff was pretty much gringo.....but kind of spicy.....cheap, and worked on the taco salad OK......I have ground round I'm going to use later to make taco meat to go on tostadas or more taco salad......

lots of rain last night

it rained for hours, after the storm front blew through.....38,000 customers without power around Greenville, but I didn't have any electrical problems.....overcast and cool this morning, chances of showers all day.....I ran the vacuum yesterday, but I've already tracked in more little pieces of grass ....from the walks I guess....I did a good mopping of the kitchen too.....seared some rib-eye in olive oil and black pepper for supper....with mac-n-cheese and lima beans....put a little of that wasabi-horseradish-mustard on the steak.....the bbq pork sandwich worked for lunch, so I'll do that again today.....and this evening I might do a chicken taco salad.....breakfast was the poached egg on toast....eggs were a buck a dozen at the store this week.....but the over-all grocery bill keeps inflating, despite what the government says about there being no inflation....paid a couple of bills this morning......as I was coming back from the park walk I saw the mail truck, so I guess I could go see if I got anything....probably not.....

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

it's a beautiful morning

cool, breezy, blue sky.....more or less "normal" for here this time of year.....so windows are open and it's nice in the house too.....I went grocery shopping, and then went walking, and just finished going through the Clinton Chronicle for this week.....the City tree-trimming crew is out working around the back-yard power lines again, mainly two doors over on Washington it looks like right now.....they got a new "bucket-truck" this year, because the old one was beyond safe repair....that's what it said in the paper a while back.....so the guy with the chain-saw isn't climbing up the trees, he's riding around in the bucket.....that must be safer.....I got some prepared bbq pork that I'm going to use for lunch meat....I'll start on that today.....and I'm going to keep working on the mexican fixings too.....and I got steak for a couple of dinners.....

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

68 degrees, 7mph wind

so it was nice out cleaning up the back yard earlier this morning.....trimmed along the foundation, trimmed some bushes, cut the grass, and took some yard debris out to the curb for pick-up.....and right now there's plenty of breeze coming in through the living room windows.....the afternoon temp should be only 3 degrees above normal, instead of the 10 degrees it's been in this heat wave.....and Wednesday it might rain.....used the last egg in the carton this morning, and I need bread and butter too, and orange juice, more apples.....so I should make a list for tomorrow morning's shopping.....I've still got that red beans and rice dish to make, maybe I'll do that today....the cold white zinfandel would be good with something spicy like that.....still watching old British comedy series and bizarre old movies in the evening.....and the news from France 24.....

Monday, June 13, 2011

got the front yard done

went out around 8 when it was still fairly cool and ran the trimmer and the mower......but I didn't do the back yet, maybe tomorrow.....after supper yesterday some rain came through and cooled things off nicely for the evening.....I had a pork chop, slaw, mac-and-cheese......in this morning's paper I read where the lady around the corner passed away Saturday.....says she was 78.....she would be out doing things in her yard until maybe six months ago I think.....and then you could see the visiting nurse and meals-on-wheels coming by.....it's a house I walk by every day on my way to the park....some wind from the north today, and the barometer was falling last time I looked, so we might be in for another cooling bit of rain this afternoon too......

Sunday, June 12, 2011

french toast and sausage

for Sunday breakfast.....pleasant enough weather in the morning, mid-90's called for again late afternoon.....60% chance of thunderstorms afternoon and evening.....last night the storms missed Clinton again, just rumbling around the edges in the dark .....distant flashes.....I just had breakfast for supper Saturday, didn't feel like fixing a big meal.....so I had an egg scrambled with sausage and salsa on top of a piece of buttered toast......probably will dip into the salsa jar at lunch today too, make another bean-salsa-cheese tostado ......I forget what brand the salsa is....it was the cheapest thing on the shelf at the store, but it's actually perfectly decent stuff......

Saturday, June 11, 2011

muggy saturday morning

but only in the 70's for the walking.....the new walking sandals work very well....good arch support and heel cushion.....both things that relate to the iffy left knee, as well as to back and foot comfort.....the clever design does not rub anywhere, and there is some friction to the surface where the foot hits sandal, so they don't slip around at all either.....so I could get a decent stride going around the park, and came back and took a cool shower.....got out a clean white tee shirt.....blasted my self with the bedroom ceiling fan on high to help dry off....that works.....it's the little things in life.....the details......I'll probably watch Saturday afternoon baseball again on Fox....one baseball game a week is plenty.....the weeds need attention again, and I'm hoping that Monday morning will be cloudy, per the predictions.....so I can cut grass that day.....I was sitting out on the porch fairly late last night, around 11.....and there were a couple of other neighbors out on their porches too.....enjoying the night air, watching the fireflys, the lightning to the East......

Friday, June 10, 2011

Ozark Trail hiking sandals

after my walking this morning, I decided that my old sandals were just plain worn out....so one thing I got at Wal*Mart was a pair of 12 buck walking sandals.....the only description offered on the tag was "functional"......they seem sturdy enough, and are comfortable.....my old pair lasted 4 years I think, it's what I wear pretty much all Summer long, the sandals.....I also got a 5 litre box of Almaden White Zinfandel, which is chilling right now.....2 bucks cheaper than at my usual grocery store......so some cold white zin with a chicken tostada for supper I guess.....no mail today, but yesterday I did get a Guitar Player.......

storms missed here

last night.....but it says in the paper that lots of people had their power knocked out around Greenville......I heard some thunder sitting out on the porch late, but that was it for Clinton.....the ozone warning has gone from "moderate" to "unhealthy".....but I didn't notice anything walking around the park a little while ago......nothing like smog in Riverside or whatever.....hazy and breezy right now......I might ride over by Laurens or something, just to get out for a while today.....the microwave tostada worked well for lunch yesterday.....today I'll do grilled swiss on wheat with a sausage patty, and chips......maybe I'll go by Wal*Mart while I'm out and see if they have any bargains on white wine, something to put in the fridge in this hot weather.....sometime before July 3rd I've got to remember to go in and pay the homeowner's insurance.....7/3/08 was when I closed on this property......

Thursday, June 9, 2011

park walk

can be largely in the shade early enough in the morning....it's just the last block back to the house where the sun is in your face and there's only one shady magnolia ......so I'm done going out for the day, until the sun starts going down.....got some breeze coming in the living room, got some things in the washer.....can make a frijole and cheese and salsa tostado for lunch today, maybe with an icy gin and tonic.....even have some lime.....and then supper looks like a pork chop with a biscuit and gravy, and use up the chili beans as the other side? why not.....yesterday by supper time the AC was running, will probably be like that today too, in the 90's by 3 pm.....moderate ozone in the Upstate lately, which is unusual.....this lingering high pressure area is unusual this particular time of the year......

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

wind SW 6 mph

a little breeze like that is enough to make for a good park walk, with the temp at 82.....went grocery shopping, and got stuff for chicken tostadas, pork chops with biscuits and gravy, and red beans and rice with sausage.....also taco salad with kidney beans is an option.....I can have bean and cheese tostadas as a lunch choice too.....I had the house closed up and the AC on from around 4 until dark yesterday.....might have to do that again today.....otherwise I'm doing fine with ceiling fans and whatever breeze comes in.....

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

warmer this morning

than it was yesterday at the same time.....but still cool enough to walk the park and not get overheated too much.....reading in the paper, I guess that storm Sunday night did quite a bit of damage around Fountain Inn and even Grey Court.....trees down, and damage to houses and cars, etc....the worst of it West of Clinton......I got an onion finally yesterday, so I had my steak smothered with onion last night, with beans and slaw as the sides......the weather is predicted to stay hot, so I'm thinking I'll go to mexican food this coming week, like taco salad and tostadas or something.....I can use up more of the slaw mix instead of buying lettuce.....well, sounds like the mail just got here so I'll go look at that.....

Monday, June 6, 2011

the clanging crossing bell

I was hearing last night wasn't because of the storm, it was because a train had come apart and one car then "slightly" derailed.....at the main intersection in town, right across from Mc Donald's.....trains seem to be going through OK now.....it said online that the couplings between the 13th and 14th car just uncoupled.....I wonder how often that happens? Anyway, dampish and cool this morning, nice weather for a walk.....and I need to do some shopping this morning too I think, couple of things......

Sunday, June 5, 2011

evening thunderstorms

two of them, maybe an hour and a half apart......lots of lightning both times, enough to glitch the electricity.......and a real downpour the second storm......they did cool things off anyway.....now the frogs and crickets are making a real racket outside.....and the bell at a railroad crossing was clanging for a long time, the storm must have shorted something out over there......so now I'm about ready to call it a night....maybe I'll look at some ten o'clock news first.....

90's in the afternoon

I think today will just be a little cold supper....leftover wings, leftover biscuit, slaw....don't want to heat up the kitchen at all....the biscuits get better sitting a few days, I think....had a swiss cheeseburger for lunch, toad-in-a-hole for breakfast.....just been staying inside reading.....

walk-off homer

watched a baseball game Saturday afternoon and on into the evening .....12 innings before Pujols hit it into the bullpen.....had to run the AC before the sun went down, it was around 90 outside, and muggy enough to be uncomfortable.....but a little later it was nice enough to sit on the porch for a while, as it started cooling off some.....I fixed chicken wings, a biscuit with gravy, and more cole slaw for supper.....plenty of slaw left to use up.....mild here this Sunday morning, pleasant early walk.....

Saturday, June 4, 2011

got some walking done

a couple of times around the square in Laurens.....went over early to see what was going on for the first day of Farmers Market.....some booths set up with produce, and bake sale stuff, and herbs and what all.....some of the hot rods were there already, I think there will be more as the day goes on....and I guess there will be live music later too.....my idea was to take a look before it got very hot or crowded....didn't spend any money since I didn't take any money to spend.....I'm not a good customer as far as impulse spending goes......and as far as getting a watermelon or local peaches, the people who sell out of the back of a pick-up along the highway have the best prices as far as I can tell.....last night was very pleasant for porch-sitting....lots of fireflys, mild weather....no mosquitos bit me.....I figured out how to bring up the "music and musicals" genre on Netflix, and watched an Iron Butterfly concert yesterday....I knew there had to be an option like that somewhere.....there's still plenty to learn about streaming, new things to figure out.....the steak dinner last night was excellent.....they run those rib-eyes on special once a month or so.....a couple of the local hamburger places have rib-eye sandwiches on the menu too......

Friday, June 3, 2011

north wind in the afternoon

so it's not so terribly muggy....can leave the windows open and the AC turned off.....at least right now.....had a hamburger with pickles and potato chips for lunch, with a glass of wine.....I'm going to iron skillet 4 oz. of rib-eye for supper, with the beans and the slaw as the sides I suppose.....then Saturday I should use up more chicken wings, probably with biscuits and gravy as one side....and either beans or slaw as the other.....life remains so complicated.....watched Alexander Nevsky last night....don't know what I'll find this evening......I've got a Supertramp channel running on Pandora....I always liked them....."can we have kippers for breakfast, do they have them in Texas?"

took about an hour and a half

from 8 to 9:30 roughly....to cut the grass....front, back, and sides....trying to take advantage of a relatively cool morning, it started out overcast.....at 10:30 it's 77 with a breeze coming in the living room through the west window.....

Thursday, June 2, 2011

got cooled off nicely

when a thunderstorm came down from north of here with a little rain and wind.....so it was nice out on the front porch after dark.....some better air for sleeping tonight.....

air kicked on at 2:30

97 heat index in Clinton, 2nd of June......remember those last stinkin' hot days of school? And the first days of school in September were always stinkin' too.....and schools back there in ancient times didn't have any air conditioned classrooms.....the offices for the Principal and whoever might have window units.....don't remember really.....finished a good sci-fi book, and I've got one of those history-oriented type mystery-thriller things started now.....the type of thing where you might actually learn some history, or least get some ideas of what to google about the "facts".....

fairly comfortable

walk around the mill park, enough of a breeze to keep some cool....80 inside and out this time of morning.....the City utility dudes are out in Earl's backyard.....he has a power pole in his yard, and it looks like maybe they are trimming the trees away from the lines, or working at something on the line that goes to the houses down the rest of the Washington block, through their backyards.....last night I went out on the front porch about 9:30, and came right back inside.....it was still too hot and muggy to sit and rock in any real comfort.....watched Fellini's 8 1/2 last night, that's a long movie....a long strange movie.....Netflix has decided that I like "cerebral drama", so it offers up choices like that.....I should try to trigger "French New Wave".....I might finish off the blackeye peas this evening, and then treat myself Friday to a steak dinner.....small piece of rib-eye with chili beans and slaw as sides? The store brand "chili beans" are sort of like the Texas Ranch Beans I've favored for a long time, but they don't have them here that I've found....

breeze from the north

makes it bearable on the front porch.....for a little while.....heat index of 95 outside, but still OK inside.....fixed a wasabi mustard and mayo burger with pickle slices for lunch....forgot to buy an onion, for the second time....oh well, I did pick up a jar of those bread-and-butter pickle slices which I like.....I've got good library books to read, so I've been reading this afternoon mostly, with a break jammin' on the latest guitar for a half hour or so.....it said on the news the other night that in this "dangerous" heat and humidity the elderly might want to not over do it with their usual exercise....cut back some in this weather was the advice...but I still feel somewhat guilty about not getting all my walking done.....well, I walked around in the grocery store I guess....I did remember to get more peanuts (unsalted) ....the pickles said they were unsalted too.....I didn't know they were ever salted, just pickled.....what do I know....

hazy, muggy

80 in the house at by 10 am, so I've closed windows and switched the air on so it will start when it gets around 85 in the entrance hall....got the ceiling fan on in the living room....just got back from the store, got stuff for hamburgers....including wasabi horseradish mustard that was on close- out real cheap....there might be good reason for that, we'll see....and I got rib-eye steak and chicken wings, microwave mac-and-cheese, orange juice, more of those good Pink Lady apples, and etc....for supper I think I'll do wings, biscuits, cole slaw.....got the weekly paper to read....nothing in the mail but a BofA credit card offer....how could I pay back a credit card?
