about 80 outside

and about 80 inside at 9:15 am......clouded over, some NW wind......probably get to mid-90's in the afternoon with 50% chance of thunder showers......same old same old.......had french toast with sausage for breakfast, looking at grilled extra sharp cheddar on 7-grain for lunch, giant cheeseburger for supper.....that about sums up another Sunday.....

about 7:30 pm

there was a half-hour long thunderstorm and cloudburst that cooled things down about ten degrees real quick.....but probably raised the humidity? Anyway, I went out on the porch and watched that.....

heat advisory until 8 pm EDT

got back from my shopping trip to Laurens.....went while it was still relatively cool, only about 90F on the time and temp sign on that one bank on the highway near Hickory Point......so I did my walking inside a cool big box retail establishment, starts with a "W"......I mixed some bbq sauce right in the ground round and fried that up for my monster cheeseburger last night.....that was the whole meal, just a burger with lots of stuff on it....plenty filling.....so today I'll go back to a chicken sandwich....keep things simple.....slept through the night....well, from 11 to 6 without out waking up that I can remember.....I usually wake up and look at the clock sometime in the small hours, but I don't think I did last night.....

mowed the front lawn

well, cut the weeds out front anyway.....did that while it was still 70-something.....at noon it's 90-something already, like it has been for a while, like it's going to be a while longer.....one forecaster said this heat won't break until September.....and they start school around here the second week of August I think.....still have some breeze coming into the living room right now, but shortly I will close up the place and turn on the AC......I made an elaborate chicken burger last night, and am thinking of a sort of giant cheeseburger for today....those whole wheat buns are good things.....I have seven-grain bread this week for breakfast toast and lunch sandwiches, they had the kind I like on sale.....my library books are interesting, and I'm still finding plenty of oddball movies to watch in the evening .......I'll probably make a Wal*Mart run tomorrow.....the new steeple is up on that church I mentioned....looks exactly like the old one, as best I can recall....it was built in Texas and shipped here.....an article online said that there had been water damage to the wooden base of the old structure, so now there's a new metal floor to it, designed to drain off any water that blows in.....they saved the old bell to put back in.....it all cost $78,000.....

church steeples

some months ago they took the steeple off of this church I walk past every morning.....and later I read something online about how that was somewhat common nowadays, since the insurance companies were charging high premiums for old unstable steeples that might break off in extreme weather events and cause damage.....this morning people were out at the church unloading a new steeple.....it looked like it was fiberglass sections on steel frames that would all bolt together ......the crane they had right then didn't look tall enough to actually raise the top piece all the way up, maybe a big crane was on the way.....some guy was taking pictures, so I bet you can see the topping off in the paper next week, or at GoClinton.com.....overcast this morning with some breeze, 73F.......if it's in the high 90's this evening at 7 like it was yesterday, I think I'll stay home rather than walk over to see the band on the square......

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

library, grocery store

found something to read, and got peach-mango V-8 and other good things ......triple-digit heat index again today......ham-salad sandwich for lunch, with a pepper and corn-chips.....for supper I have left-over pasta.....and then I can make chicken breast on a bun with lettuce, onion, pickles, etc....for light suppers in the mounting heat-wave that's predicted.......it was supposed to be cooler today I thought they said once, but Weatherunderground says today will be warmer than yesterday.....Thursday evening they have a band over by the train tracks.....might be pretty hot for that, unless it rains.....found another Brando movie last night......

nice morning for a drive

that pleasant after-a-rain aroma in the air.....anywhere around here it's that driving-through-the-woods-after-a-rain sensation.....and the walk along the river keeps you mostly in the shade at that time of morning anyway....sat on a bench near the river bank for a bit.....took the back way home, past the airport, etc....then sat out in the back yard shade, and am now considering dicing up the piece of ham that's left and mixing it together with the pimento cheese that's left to make sandwich filling for lunch.....that should work.....the ads haven't come yet in the mail.....maybe at the store tomorrow I can find some whole wheat buns, and use some of those chicken patties as sandwiches.....and I could maybe find a smaller thing of hamburger and use some buns that way too.....buy some lettuce....we'll figure something out.....

a soothing rain

started about sunset last night, and was still coming down when I went to sleep after the 10 o'clock news......a good soaking rain I hope.....the farmers need some moist soil for planting.....so it's cooler this morning, and the afternoon high shouldn't be as high hopefully......I did that pasta dish yesterday and it came out pretty good.....leftovers of course ......I might drive over to Laurens some time this morning, as much for a drive as for any shopping really.....I could walk in the park by the river, that would be something different.....the humidity is still here today, but the weatherman on the news said we might get a drop in that Wednesday, as some kind of front moves down over the mountains.....but then by the weekend look for more humid heat, etc....I've been drinking lots of fruit juice......

Monday, July 25, 2011

laundry day

the washer was running as I walked around the park.....cool enough for that this morning, some clouds, some breeze.....and a good chance of rain towards evening, so all in all a bit of relief from the pressure cooker....anyway, now the stuff is in the dryer.....and after I get it put away later then that will be all my chores for today ......I had more of that chicken for sunday supper, with pimento cheese grits and sweet corn......maybe today I'll make a pasta casserole with sausage and cheese sauce, with "kitchen cut" green beans.....I've got a small can of mushrooms too that could go in the dish.....I remembered to watch Zen on Mystery last night.....if it's in Rome, why don't they have Italian accents instead of London accents?

Sunday, July 24, 2011

late last night

there was lightning to the south.....but nothing got here to cool things off at all.....it was still above 80 in the wee small hours......from out on the front porch it sounded like a band was playing somewhere, or somebody was having a loud party......no venue for that I can think of, no bars that have bands.....maybe it was just at a house.....or maybe a church youth thing? They turned it down after 10 anyway......today is predicted to be about the same as yesterday, around 100.....the Braves were at the Reds, and they showed a thermometer on the field that said 120.....Atlanta ended up getting thumped 11-2.......right now there's some thin clouds and a bit of a breeze, so maybe it won't heat up as fast......but I might need the AC around noon again, like the last three days.....just close the blinds and take a nap after lunch, like a tropical siesta......

Saturday, July 23, 2011

city utility bill

was all the mail I got today.....80 bucks for water, sewer, trash, and electricity.....not bad for the warmest June since the 1950's or whatever they said.....the news the other night had a segment about people complaining about their $200 electric bills.....they must have big houses, or put the thermostat too low.....one lady was fussing because her house stayed at 82 instead of cooling down into the 70's like she wanted.....well, there you go.....I've got the AC set at 85 and I'm not suffering......there's scattered clouds this afternoon, with rain in some Upstate areas.....maybe something will pop up here towards the end of the day......I've got another 2 dollar frozen thing I might use for a light hot weather supper.....a microwaveable philly cheese steak sandwich, with peppers and onion on sour dough.....grilled sour dough.....it must have that shiny folding thing in the box, to grill in the microwave.....I guess that works, far as I can remember.....I can have that and a glass of white zin, watching the Braves and the Reds, which starts at 4......

looks like it's time

to vacuum, sweep, and mop......another heat advisory day here, but so far this morning it's not too bad, some breeze coming in the windows.....yesterday I had to close up the house and turn on the air right around noon, it was plenty hot out by then......and it stayed that way until well after dark, we haven't had those cooling evening rain fronts for a few days now.....those might come back Sunday they say.....that breaded chicken breast product cooked up crisp and tasty, with pan fried stuffing and sweet corn sides.....I've got a lot of that chicken, so I'll be doing variations of that for a while.....that and more of the penne alfredo, that came out good last weekend or whenever that was......I've got some mango flavored V-8, that's tasty, and has lots of anti-oxidants it says on the label......well, I should get up and get going on housekeeping chores.....

Friday, July 22, 2011

cut the grass out back

while most of it was still in the shade.....ended up drenched in sweat.....high humidity again today....never did really cool off much .....it was still rather warm out on the front porch at 11 last night.....there's some breeze right now, to mitigate things a bit.....watched some strange japanese gangster movie last night.....and another movie that said it was "loosely based on a novel by Emile Zola"......on BBC all they talk about is the Murdoch scandal lately......so I watched some evening news on Al Jazeera....more revolutions and famines on that news feed.....I think the mail truck went by without stopping here, but I'll go look anyway when I get up off the sofa, where I've been sitting unwinding from the yard-work exertion for a while already.....I heated up a french-bread pizza thingy in the convection/toaster oven yesterday for supper, because those come out sort of mushy in the microwave....it was tasty, a Lean Cuisine frozen offering.....

Thursday, July 21, 2011

3 pm, heat index 110

that's outside ......I'm cool enough inside....I read a thing about why it's hard to sleep well if it's too hot in your bedroom.....your core temp has to go down in the middle of the night to get a good rest, so if that can't happen, you'll be awake and sweltering....the good old ceiling fan on the slow speed must be enough to get the job done, because I always turn the AC off before I go to bed....maybe some place in the world you have to leave it on all night....some folks around here do that....I wouldn't want their electric bills.....they say turkeys are keeling over dead, and cattle in the field in some places in the Midwest.....I can remember the chickens dying on the egg ranches in Valley Center, before they put in those giant fans blowing water vapor through the coops.....those fans seemed to blow the chicken shit stink all the way up the grade to Paradise Mountain.....I don't think I'll make gravy at supper after all, it just doesn't seem right in this weather.....after thinking about the dead chickens anyway......maybe I'll just nuke a french bread pizza....they were on sale for 2 bucks when I went grocery shopping....that's the thing about frozen food in this heat, you don't have to worry about it going funny on yuh.....

dew point 77, heat index 92

at 9:15 in the morning.....so I'm not going to work in the yard....or even go walk around the park, it's just too muggy ......I'll go out and sit in the shade and eat an apple, the elderly need to take it easy in this kind of weather.....finished off the taco salad fixings yesterday, so today I can start on the frozen chicken breast patties I got.....breaded patties, you can just fry 'em up.....and I'll heat up country gravy from a fifty cent packet, and use up the last of the stuffing too.....with green beans or corn as the second side dish.....the ham and pimento cheese sandwich made a tasty lunch yesterday, so I'll probably reprise that today......watched a Jimmy Stewart western before going out on the porch around nine in the evening, when it finally got cool enough to get out of the air conditioning ......slept OK under the ceiling fan.....

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

soupy air

I just read that as the dew point approaches 75 degrees, people can actually feel the extra weight of the moisture in the air as they breathe.....2% of the air is water at that point.....dew point of 72 here now, with 88 as the temp, for a heat index of 94 at 11:20 in the morning.....so we have pretty soupy air.......went to the grocery store but forgot to get the eggs....so I'll go in a couple of days and get eggs, and whatever else I'm missing by then....I've still got salad to use up for tonight, and then I've got chicken to cook for the week, along with rice and pasta sides I suppose, and green beans, etc.....got wine to chill, and tequila to mix with pina, as the heat wave cranks up again through the weekend.....tropical beverages are called for....had a pimento cheese and ham sandwich for lunch.....there was an article in the paper about the pimento cheese traditions in the South....and it was on sale at $1.66 for a small container, so I got some.....

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

around 80 degrees

at 10 in the morning.....it was 77 when I did my park walk.....and then I sat out in the shady back yard and drank my fruit juice....the last apple in the bag was rotten, so I threw it out for the birds to eat.....I had a taco salad last night, which hit the spot....I watched two Netflix movies, Pow-Wow Highway, and One Eyed Jacks, with Marlon Brando and Karl Malden.....those were both good flicks.....Netflix sent an e-mail saying they could credit 3% of my $7.99 for the month since the service was off Monday night....whatever....so I've still got wings and stuffing and peas enough for one more time.....and then it's grocery day anyway.....still eating ham and swiss sandwiches for lunch....did have a bean and cheese tostada for Sunday lunch....with olives and lettuce and salsa, sour cream, scallions.....I finished one library book yesterday.....sat out on the front porch around 11 or so, and then went to bed.....I might look for a jar of peppers at the store, I've been out of those for a while.....the Italian kind.....one day recently I saw three different references to "Italian Beef Subs".....so I looked to see what the heck Italian beef is.....it's pot roast with Italian seasonings in it....like salad dressing seasonings.....and a bottle of Italian peppers was called for in one recipe that I saved to desktop, to try some day.....

Monday, July 18, 2011

was overcast

early on, stayed cool enough to get out and trim the front yard.....but I decided the back could wait to some other time......later in the week the real hot weather that's in Texas or thereabouts now is supposed to get to the East, so it might be triple-digit time again like Thursday and Friday or something.....maybe there will be one more cool morning so I can cut those weeds in the back.....Netflix had an outage last night, so I watched a real crazy ole flick from 1948.....directed by Ida Lupino, on the film noir feed from Archive.org.....and then I sat out on the front porch as it got dark .....and then I watched Mystery on PBS.....and then I went to bed.....so now it's another week started.....the excitement will likely continue unabated.....

sunday afternoon

what a nice afternoon.....low 80's, little puffy clouds in the blue sky.....quiet and calm....every once in a while a gentle breeze.....tourism board weather......

sunday morning

looks like it's going to be cool again today......that's fine with me....I think I'll go sit out in the back yard for a while ......I'm feeling too lazy to even open a book and read.....I did read the sunday paper.....I've still got the real estate supplement to look at, they are actually selling and building new homes around the city of Greenville.....the population in that area is growing.....some new jobs are coming in .....mostly automobile related, and some IT too I think.....the subdivisions that have some success offer homes that look like homes in the older neighborhoods.....brick homes, and Craftsman-accent traditional styles.....they even acid-treat the sidewalks to look like old concrete? One builder mentioned that in their article anyway.....but there are still foreclosures going on too, beats me......

Saturday, July 16, 2011

British Open, giant tostada, etc....

Some guy who went to Clemson is tied for the lead at Sandwich as they go into a rainy weekend? There will probably be golf on TV I guess....pretty damn boring usually.....Phillies and Mets on Saturday afternoon baseball.....I need to open that bag of salad and build a giant tostada for supper today....it says on it to use by the 20th....the chicken wings came out really tasty, falling off the bone.....the Bimbo bread (say Beembo) makes good toast for my poached egg breakfasts, like this morning.....it's cool again today....this morning at breakfast it was below 70 in the kitchen, first time in months seems like.....good sleeping conditions.....and morning walks were pleasant today.....sat out on the rocker and drank a glass of fruit and vegetable juice, since I'm low on apples.....it's one of those dead quiet Saturday mornings.....

Friday, July 15, 2011

Fall weather all of a sudden

rained during the night, but not thunderstorms, just a slow rain.....was in the 60's for my early walk, and then on my walk around the park it started raining, so I got a little wet....dark skies and an east wind....so the heat wave is broken for at least a couple of days I guess.....I was watching the BBC news feed from London last night, and the weather report for the British isles was "Fall weather over the weekend"......same on this side of the pond apparently......since it looks like a cool day, I went ahead and put a half-dozen chicken wings in the crock pot fairly early on, with a mixture of honey bbq sauce and soy sauce.....we'll see at supper time.....I'm going to have mushroom-cornbread stuffing and sweet peas for the sides.....same thing as a leftovers supper in a few days I suppose......they got that steel building over the back fence done by around 4 yesterday, it looks pretty neat....maybe 30' x 20'? It has a regular people door with a little window on the front, along with a roll-up type garage door....it's not tall enough really to drive a truck in there, but they were moving yard stuff into it.....it's not in my view from the living room, I only notice it from the kitchen window.....

Thursday, July 14, 2011

it was a lot cooler today

compared to the near record heat Tuesday and Wednesday.....had the windows open all day long, no need for AC.....been sitting out on the porch as the moon comes up, orange-colored through the overcast....but I don't think my camera would get a very good shot of that....a telephoto lens would work maybe .......through the oak tree out front.....dang, there's some kind of weird bug in the house.....don't know what it is flying around......

change in the wind

instead of a swampy wind from the south-east, we've got a 8mph ENE breeze this morning....so I've got windows open and cool dry air moving through the house.....I did my walking and then was sitting out in the shady back yard, very pleasant out.....they are starting to work in Earl's backyard again, where they poured that pad a couple of weeks ago....he says it's going to be a "double walled steel building".....I think that's what he said....they have a couple of ATVs and a riding mower and a small boat and an old pick-up in the yard....maybe all that stuff will go in the new building....they had a small plywood shed against the north fence where they had lawnmowers and tools that they tore down a while back.....I can see guys carrying steel joists from my living room window right now......had a salad for supper last night.....I've got some leftover pasta I can have tonight.....and then I'll make taco meat with canned roast beef like I used to do, and have a dinner tostada Saturday, maybe chicken dinner Sunday.....it should be cool enough for that over the weekend.....I've got a loaf of Bimbo Honey Wheat Bread....I believe I read once that Bimbo is the largest bakery in the world....I think it's a Mexican company....they had a big plant in Escondido between the Swap Meet and the train station....you could always smell bread baking.....early in the morning they would give away all kinds of baked goods to the homeless or to charity outfits.....the day-old or week-old or whatever.....the skid row people who hung out in that area would put their money together and buy baloney or something, and beer....and sit out leaning against the parking lot fence where I worked because it was all covered with vines along one part, and the cops couldn't see them there eating Bimbo bread sandwiches and drinking beer for breakfast.....

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

worked up a sweat

just bringing in the groceries.....but the glass is falling and some kind of little cool front is coming down, so maybe today will end up not as hot as yesterday.....it was still hot well into the night.....I got stuff at the store for some chicken dinners, and some mexican dinners, and some dinner salads I guess.....I still have ham for lunch sandwiches.....nothing in the mail but the natural gas bill, but it's not very much this time of year, and it's not due until almost the end of the month, so it can go sit on my desk for a week or so before I need to mess with it.....I usually just get orange juice and apple juice, but this time I got some tropical blend juices....since it's been feeling pretty tropical around here.....

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

just nasty outside

the weather service says the heat index right now is 114 degrees.....thank goodness for functioning air conditioning.....I stayed in all afternoon, reading, playing the online radio, messing with guitars.....I'll watch an episode of Xena, and some news, and then at 8 the all star baseball game comes on, which will last 'til late I imagine......

heat warning

stay inside from 11 AM to 9 PM......heat index of 110 possible in the Upstate.....whatever.....it was still hot outside on the porch right before bedtime last night.....ran the ceiling fan to sleep.....but I got my walking done this morning OK, including the park walk....it was sweaty, but do-able.....and it was before 11......but this humidity makes you feel like a fish.....your skin wrinkles up like you've been swimming.....I don't get any ideas from the grocery ads this morning, don't know what kind of cool suppers I can fix for the coming week....maybe go back to taco salads or something like that.....I also got a Woodwind & Brasswind catalog in the mail....that must be from when I ordered a fiddle through Amazon a couple of years ago.....it came from W&B.....so that's something to look through and throw away.....guess I'll have ham and swiss sandwich with pickle slices and mayo for lunch, with chips and merlot.....I'll try alfredo pasta with mushrooms and a green salad for this evening....if I close the kitchen door and run the ceiling fan in there maybe cooking the pasta won't heat up the rest of the house any.....by that time of day I'll probably have the central air running anyway....

Monday, July 11, 2011

busy monday morning

it was foggy and cool early on so I thought about giving the front yard a once-over with the mower.....but it's also library day and I needed to go over there.....so I did both, and got done by 10:30.....also went in the store while I was over that way and got a bag of salad greens....so I can have a salad today with my steak and fries supper.....had oatmeal for breakfast, huevo ranchero for lunch.....got a Guitar Player in the mail, so I've got something to look at .....and I usually find something in the mag that inspires me to pick up a guitar and play some.....only other mail was two life insurance offers.....one for children's life insurance? No rain is foreseen today or tomorrow, only real high temp and humidity......

Sunday, July 10, 2011

nice afternoon

clouds and breeze have been sticking around, so the steamy heat of lately hasn't shown up today.....yet, anyway.....will probably make it through the day relatively cool.....don't know what I want to fix for supper later, something light......haven't done much of anything today, didn't even finish one library book that's due tomorrow.....guess I can renew it.....the story is interesting, but it's a slow read because the style gets verbose in places......I've got a couple more old costume dramas in my instant queue, something to watch this evening......

foggy sunday morning

french toast with ham once again......the pile of steak fries with my new york strip yesterday was an indulgence, but worth it......the baseball game was a good one, a pitchers duel.....Braves ended up winning when they got some hits off one of the Phillie relievers.....meanwhile the Padres lost to the Dodgers, even though they had a no-hitter going most of the game? They cut away to that game a couple of times.....Dodger Stadium looked empty.....well, two cellar-dweller teams.....it rained enough to cool things off per usual before dark.....I watched some old Steve Reeves movie about Romulus and Remus.....a somewhat murky looking Franco-Italian production from 1954 or so......but it was pretty good really......a costume drama.....it stayed in the 70's overnight, but I slept like a log.....even overslept by about half an hour, compared to usual.....maybe because the light was dimmer in the fog? I caught the 10 o'clock news on Fox last night.....I usually watch that on NBC.....anyway, on Fox I thought I heard them say that today was National Hot Dog Day.....but that's really on the 23rd.....today isn't the 23rd.....never trust Fox for accurate news......

Saturday, July 9, 2011

lethargic weather

100% humidity, mostly overcast.....I'm too lazy to get out and drive over to the Farmers Market....I don't have money to buy anything anyway....and I'd need to go by the gas station....forget it.....I did clean up around the house and yard some....I needed to cut the mimosa off the back steps so I could see to go up and down them safely.....and I needed to vacuum up the grass clippings I keep tracking in whenever I mow outside, like yesterday.....but just a few simple things will use up all your energy on a morning like this....that's OK, it's perfect conditions for doing nothing much anyway........might be a good baseball game on this afternoon, Braves and Phillies.....and then the All Star game is coming up pretty quick? I think lots of people must be gone to the beach or the lakes or somewhere.....there's hardly any cars driving around, fewer even than usual....dis town becoming like a ghost town.....it did decline in population between the 2000 census and 2010.....so fees per address go up for city services, etc.....I'm not complaining, you still get plenty of value for your dollar around here.....and it's so quiet and lazy.......

Friday, July 8, 2011

been out on the porch

for an hour or so, watching the thunderstorm....lots of rain there for a while, but now the front has passed over.....the fire-flys come back out as soon as the rain lets up, and so do the bats.....and now the sirens.....somebody probably couldn't figure out how to drive in the rain without driving off the road.....I've got a potato in the cupboard I've got to remember to use.....I'm thinking home fries with a piece of steak maybe.....I need to vacuum tomorrow.....

noon friday

they got the shuttle off......Florida was getting a good soaking yesterday, so they didn't know if it would be clear to launch today.....our storms last night went south of town again....just some rain in Clinton, but a lightning cell over Joanna.....so you heard lots of thunder, even as the skies began to clear here.....it stayed overcast into this morning, so it was about 75 at breakfast....I went and got the paper and then went out back and ran the mower.....by 9:30 I was finished, and all sweated up and ready for a shower.....after that I read the paper.....I forgot to look and see if there is any mail today, I can do that in a few minutes.....probably not.....oatmeal for breakfast, baloney sandwich and slaw for lunch, supper will be pasta salad.....I have a strip steak that will be good for a couple of meals, might have some of that Saturday.....I'm going through that bag of cherries pretty fast, for snack-time......

Thursday, July 7, 2011

the weather:same as yesterday and tomorrow

muggy mornings giving way to hot afternoons with evening hit-and-miss thunderstorms, cooling off a bit in the middle of the night, and then starting all over again......I thought about cutting the weeds this morning, but drove over to Laurens instead and did my walking inside Wal*Mart.....got a few things there.....came back and ate a bowl of cherries sitting in the shady backyard.....mail truck hasn't been by yet I don't think....there's a sub on the route this week looks like......if you take a week's vacation with a holiday in it then you save a day of annual leave....that's what I used to do anyway.....I'll finish off the last pieces of rib for lunch today, with some slaw and the last of the chablis.....I got a good price on Merlot, so that will be the house wine for a while......I got some whole-wheat pasta I'm going to try, with alfredo sauce.....the last time I used a tomato type pasta sauce it didn't agree with me too well.....I have a new shaker of grated parmesan-romono.......and a fresh thing of oregano.....I'll see what I can cook up.....

Wednesday, July 6, 2011

storms east and south of here

in the late afternoon....wind from the north- west seems to be blowing them past this immediate area.....in the 90's and muggy, but with the breeze blowing through the house I haven't turned on the central air yet....might do that after supper, that's been the pattern lately.....should be cooler tomorrow morning they say, maybe it will be foggy or cloudy enough to get out early and work in the yard some.....this morning I did the grocery shopping.....I wasn't very organized, but I guess I got some meals together.....got some cherries for a treat......from Washington State.....nothing much to mention in the Clinton paper this week.......

Tuesday, July 5, 2011

73F.....2mph west wind

just starting to burn off at 10:30......should be a little cooler than it was over the weekend, but still hot and humid enough for afternoon thunderstorms.....I have enough leftovers to have rib dinner again this evening....I'm going to have to start eating slaw at every meal to use up the bag of fixings before it starts turning.....well, maybe not at breakfast.....it's almost grocery day, and I still have lots of things to eat.....I might be able to get by with a fairly cheap trip to the store tomorrow......some time this week I should try to cut the weeds down out back, and also I'll probably make a shopping run to Laurens one day.....Saturday the Lauren's Farmers' Market has a yard-sale day advertised, that might be something to check out......

Monday, July 4, 2011

lots of fireworks

it got hot enough to run the AC late afternoon....around the time I ate my delicious ribs, raisin-peanut slaw, and local corn-on-the-cob.....the feast of the Fourth.....later it rained some and cooled off so I could open the windows.....and later than that folks started shooting off the fireworks in the neighborhood.....at 10:30 they are still going off....I was sitting out on the porch rocker watching them for a while.....plenty colorful .........

the storms last night

went around Clinton.....didn't even rain here, but some other towns got severe weather.....40% chance of rain tonight, so maybe that's why lots of folks were shooting off their fireworks last night.....I sat out on the porch around ten, and had a good show from various houses in the neighborhood......at the Sunday evening baseball game in Greenville, the storm went through before the 7 o'clock first pitch, so they took the tarp off the field and went ahead with the game and the fireworks.....in the 70's and breezy this morning, not bad at all so far.....but 90's predicted for late afternoon.....enough heat and humidity to cook up the thunderheads again.....after lunch I'm going to put the ribs in the oven ......I had some of the corn yesterday, it was tasty.......happy 4th to all.....7-4-11.....7+4=11?

Sunday, July 3, 2011

french toast and ham

Sunday breakfast......Laurens had their fireworks by the river last night.....just before ten you could hear the big finale over here in Clinton.....Clinton will have some Monday night.....had to run the AC until after dark yesterday, it wasn't cooling down very fast outside.....people out on porches again around ten.....I might make a ham-salad sandwich on a club roll this evening, and cook one cob of corn ......earlier in the week they were saying that Sunday would be the hottest day of the holiday weekend, but they later said that a cooler front would come down today, so maybe Saturday was the worst of the heat.....it was pleasant on the early walk......

Saturday, July 2, 2011

sort of a steambath afternoon

running the AC for a while already.....going to watch Yankees-Mets in a few minutes, in a cool dim room....decided on huevos rancheros for a light supper....with chablis, chilled of course.....

Saturday morning

I was sitting out in the back yard a little bit ago, and tried to take a picture of the overgrown beauty of it, but the camera batteries were dead....will try again some other day.....mild again this morning, after not cooling down much at night.....cooled down to 68 maybe.....had the air on after supper yesterday, while watching two Netflix western movies.....one with Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum......punched Brian Auger, Manfred Mann, Procul Harum, Lee Michaels, and Steve Winwood into a Pandora mix just now.....Summer morning music.....when I saw Led Zep, Brian Auger and the Trinity was one of the opening acts.....I think that was 1968.....I saw Lee Michaels at some kind of Love-In thing at Griffith Park I think it was.....someplace outside anyway.....just him and Frosty wailing away.....had a poached egg on toast for breakfast, ate a Gala apple for a mid-morning snack, and will probably have ham-and-swiss on wheat for lunch.....don't know about supper yet.....on the 4th I'll slow-oven the ribs.....probably get three meals off them, with raisin slaw, etc......

north wind continues

to keep things cool enough in the morning......didn't do the park walk, trimmed out front instead, weed-eater, then mower.....that's enough exercise to work up a sweat and then take a shower.....the back weeds can wait another week I guess.....going to be real hot they say over firecracker weekend.....with no rain predicted until maybe late Monday....thunder storms and fireworks at the same time? Don't know if that will work.....last night I fried some ham and made grits and redeye gravy, with a 3-bean salad side too.....today might be pulled-pork sandwich and try to use up some more potato salad.....I'm going to gain some weight before I finish off that 2 lb. container of potato salad....I got a different brand of wheat bread this time, because it was cheaper than my usual....I'll try it at lunch and see how good it is......
